Mary Heilmann was born in San Francisco in 1940. She received a BA from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1962 and a MA from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1967. Heilmann lives and works in New York. Her first major museum retrospective, To Be Someone, organized by the Orange County Museum of Art, is currently traveling in the USA and will be seen next in November, 2007, at the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston. It will then travel to the Wexner Center, Columbus and will culminate at the New Museum in September 2008.
