SOUTHERN EXPOSURE

Argentina and Chile are two neighboring South American countries located at 34º00' S, 64º00' W and 30º00' S, 71º00' W, respectively, over 4000 miles south of New York City. Despite their close geographical proximity, these countries, divided by the Andes Mountains, have marked historical and cultural differences, which inform their creative outputs.

In an experimental international outreach project, the Dumbo Arts Center (DAC) has invited eight artists from Argentina and Chile to work on-site in the gallery for two weeks prior to the exhibition's opening. The artists will be challenged to produce site-specific works that respond to the history and redevelopment of Dumbo and New York City. They will document their experience through an immediate interpretation of exposure to the new and unfamiliar. Conversely, the gallery will be open to the public from November 20th to enable visitors to interact with the artists, while work is in process and progress.
